What are skin boosters? Everything you need to know before your first treatment
Dental & Dermal is an aesthetics clinic in central Oslo, at Fridtjof Nansens Plass 9, run by Chenxiao Li. We offer skin boosters as part of our skin perfusion treatments - and here we explain everything you need to know before booking your first appointment.
What are skin boosters?
Skin boosters are micro-injections of stabilised hyaluronic acid placed superficially in the skin to deliver deep hydration, improved elasticity, and natural glow - without adding volume or changing the shape of your face.
Think of it as a moisture treatment that works from within. While creams and serums work in the upper layers of your skin, skin boosters are placed in the dermis - where hydration is actually needed.
The most commonly used products in Norway are:
- Restylane Skinboosters (Vital/Vital Light): The original skin booster, with over 20 years of clinical evidence
- Profhilo: Higher concentration hyaluronic acid with biostimulating properties
- Juvederm Volite: Provides hydration lasting up to 9 months
Skin boosters vs. filler - what's the difference?
Many confuse these, but they do entirely different things:
| Skin boosters | Filler | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Hydration and skin quality | Volume and contouring |
| Placement | Superficially in the dermis | Deeper, in specific zones |
| Result | Glow, moisture, softness | Fullness, definition |
| Visible change | Subtle (better skin quality) | Noticeable (changed shape) |
| Risk | Very low | Low to moderate |
You choose skin boosters to look fresher. You choose filler to look different.
Who are skin boosters suitable for?
Skin boosters are ideal for:
- Dehydrated skin that feels dry and dull despite a good skincare routine
- Early ageing (30+) - fine lines, loss of elasticity
- Smokers or sun-damaged skin with reduced vitality
- Prevention - you don't need to "have a problem" to benefit
- All skin types - including sensitive and acne-prone skin
Treatment works on the face, neck, hands, and décolletage.
What to expect from the treatment
The treatment itself (30–45 min):
- Numbing cream is applied 20 minutes beforehand
- The product is injected with many small punctures in an even pattern across the treatment area
- Most people describe it as mildly uncomfortable, not painful
Immediately after:
- Small bumps where the product was placed (disappear within 24–48 hours)
- Mild redness and swelling (1–2 days)
- You can wear light makeup the next day
Results over time:
- First improvement visible after 1 week
- Optimal results after 3 treatments
- Skin feels more hydrated, smoother, and looks more vital
Treatment plan and maintenance
The recommended initial protocol is:
- 3 treatments spaced 2–4 weeks apart (building phase)
- Maintenance: 1 treatment every 4–6 months
This rhythm keeps hyaluronic acid levels stable in the skin and delivers sustained improvement over time.
What do skin boosters cost at Dental & Dermal?
- Per treatment: from 2,888 NOK
- Starter package (3 treatments): from 7,500 NOK
- Maintenance treatment: from 2,888 NOK
How long does the effect last?
The effect of a single treatment lasts 4–6 months. With regular maintenance, you build a cumulative effect - skin becomes progressively better with each treatment round.
